How Things Work

Bonus Post: Please Register or Login to view.

Computer Shopper magzine did a spread this month on how things work. They are a great lay-person’s look at how different parts of computers, and related technology actually function. This is a great read for beginners and experts alike.

*WARNING*
Computer Shopper has not yet made this article available online, so I scanned the magazine. The result is: 3 500k images that are 1500 x 1000 px in size. It may be a slow load, but they are readable.

It may not be hugely different from the rest of the UMPCs out there, but Sony always wins in sex appeal!

Sony Plans a dSLR

Bonus Post: Please Register or Login to view.

There is not a huge amount in the way of details yet, but it is a very exciting prospect.

“Ever since Sony and Konica Minolta began collaborating on a joint digital SLR camera project in July 2005, I have seen many similarities in our corporate cultures. Sony is renowned for its unceasing exploration of new avenues, while Konica Minolta has a long history of developing groundbreaking technologies, like the world’s first auto-focus SLR camera and an exclusive anti-shake system.”

So that’s what happened to Minolta…

Anamorphism

You are going to want to see this one!

Bonus Post: Please Register or Login to view.

Anamorphism: a distorted projection or perspective; especially an image distorted in such a way that it becomes visible only when viewed in a special manner.

Take the above example. A painting was created, so that when reflected in a cylinder or a cone, another painting is revealed. Another method is employeed by Kurt Wenner, in his sidewalk chalk art, that can only be seen and appreciated from a certain angle.

The following samples are some of the most intriquing images I have ever seen.

Microsoft’s Plan to Map the World in Real Time

Bonus Post: Please Register or Login to view.

Internet maps updated live, in real time? Sounds a little out there, but it may not be as far out as you might think.

Researchers at Microsoft are working on technology that they hope will someday enable people to browse online maps for up-to-the-minute information about local gas prices, traffic flows, restaurant wait times, and more. Eventually, says Suman Nath, a Microsoft researcher who works on the project, which is called SenseWeb, they would like to incorporate the technology into Windows Live Local (formerly Microsoft Virtual Earth), the company’s online mapping platform.

Shock Knife

Bonus Post: Please Register or Login to view.

The police and military have to train to protect themselves against situations that they may encounter. For police, I would imagine that when a situation gets violent, the most common armament they are going to encounter would be a knife. They are legal, easy to obtain, and most homes have several.

Trouble is, it is tough to practice disarming a knife. You can’t use a real one, but if you are using a fake knife, you won’t get feedback from slices. The shock knife is designed to give that feedback. You can set it to deliver anything from a papercut type bit of pain all the way up to uniform penetrating 7,500 volts.
